Course Summary
The course provides instruction and practical training in Antarctic camp-craft and navigation along with glacier travel techniques and crevasse rescue under simulated conditions on the Derbyshire gritstone crags. This foundation course will be reinforced with further training in Antarctica.
Accommodation
Accommodation is under canvas; food and the necessary equipment will be provided, however you may prefer to bring your own personal camping equipment. If you do not have such equipment do not be alarmed; it will be provided - please give details on the field course form, which should be completed and returned as soon as possible by all those invited to attend the Field Course. If you do indicate that you will provide your own equipment you will be expected to do so, unless you notify us to the contrary.
Location & Transport
Travelling by BAS minibus
A minibus will leave Girton College at 0800 on Sunday 23 September 2012, please indicate if you are travelling from here. Another minibus will also leave BAS Cambridge at 0800, again please indicate if you are travelling from here.
Please leave your cars and additional luggage at BAS Cambridge. We recommend additional luggage is stored in BAS Cambridge. Do not leave any valuables in your vehicles and ensure you leave keys with the security guard.
Making your own way
Those making their own way should be at Yeld Farm by 1300. The farm address is Yeld Farm, Sheffield Road, Baslow, DE45 1PR and Chesterfield Railway Station is approximately 20 minutes away.
The course finishes on the morning of Wednesday 28th September and the same transport is provided for the return, normally arriving at BAS, Cambridge by mid-afternoon. People are expected to use this BAS transport where possible, but for those returning home direct from Baslow at the end of the course expenses will be reimbursed equal to second class rail fare.

Further Information for Field Course Assistants
Field Assistants will leave Cambridge on Saturday 22 September 2012 at 0900 and will have a day's familiarisation with the equipment before other Field Course participants arrive on Sunday. All Field Assistants are expected to act as instructors on the course, but newly recruited Field Assistants will be teamed with experienced ones when instructing.
