SCAR releases the first edition of POLAR NEWS. This will likely be an annual publication that focuses on bipolar science.
The latest edition covers topics such as:
• Polar Science in a Global Context: SCAR, IASC and the International Council for Science;
• Ice Sheet Mass Balance and Sea Level (ISMASS);
• The role of the European Union in Arctic Research;
• Polar Activities of the World Meteorological Organization;
• Upcoming workshops and meetings.
The Martha T. Muse Prize 2011
SCAR have just announced the winner of this year's Martha T. Muse Prize for Science and Policy in Antarctica as Dr. José Xavier from the Institute of Marine Research of the University of Coimbra in Portugal and the British Antarctic Survey in UK. Dr. Xavier has conducted outstanding research on the predator-prey dynamics that sustain populations of albatrosses, penguins and other top predators in the Southern Ocean.
UKNCAR Committee Meetings
The last UKNCAR Committee Meeting was held at BAS, Cambridge, on the 19th April, 2011. The unconfirmed minutes and actions from this meeting can now be viewed here.
CONFERENCES
2012IPY 2012 Conference: "From Knowledge to Action"
The steering committee for the IPY 2012 Conference, to be held in Montreal, Canada has announced its first circular. The Conference will draw on highlights and synthesis of polar research and how this new knowledge can be used to advance programs, policies and actions on critical global issues, such as human and environmental health, biodiversity, resource development and marine transportation, to name a few. XXXII SCAR and Open Science Conference
The next SCAR meeting and Open Science conference - Antarctic Science and Policy Advice in a Changing World - is to be held on 13-25th July 2012, in Portland, Oregon, USA.
The Conference Website is now up and running and a Second Circular has been issued.

Early Career Activities at the SCAR OSC
Note that SCAR will pay the registration fees of the first 200 students to submit abstracts that get accepted for presentation.
APECS will also be organising a Career Development Workshop so keep an eye on their website for more information.
2011
The next International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) conference is to be held on 20-27th July, 2011, in Bern, Switzerland. Conference registration and abstract submission is now open.
11th International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences (ISAES) 2011
This meeting was held on 10th-16th July, 2011, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The conference was a great success, bringing together scientists studying the different components of Polar Earth Science to exchange information and perspectives. A broad range of topics were covered incorporating the landscape and environmental response of the Polar regions, the study of geological archives, ice cores, and modern systems, and reconstructing the Earth’s climatic variability.
A number of workshops and meetings were held in conjunction with the conference and plenary speakers included Mike Bentley (University of Durham), Chuck Kennicutt (SCAR President, Texas A&M University), Helen Fricker (Scripps Institute of Oceanography) and Peter Barret (Victoria University, Wellington). XXV IUGG General Assembly 2011
The International Union on Geodesy and Geophysics held it's general assembly in Melbourne, Australia this year. The meeting attracted numerous scientists from around the globe. Further details can be found on their website.
