UK Representation to SCAR
STRUCTURE OF SCAR
By having an active scientific research programme in Antarctica, the UK is a Full Member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). As the UK National Committee, the UKNCAR elects and appoints a Permanent Delegate and an Alternate Delegate to SCAR.
The SCAR Delegates elect an Executive Committee, which is responsible for the day-to-day administration of SCAR though its Secretariat at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge. The Executive Committee comprises the President, Immediate Past-President, and four Vice-Presidents of SCAR. The SCAR Secretariat is staffed by the Executive Director, the Executive Secretary and an administrative assistant. Further information on SCAR members and Officers can be found on the SCAR website.
Standing Scientific Groups
The scientific business of SCAR is conducted by its Standing Scientific Groups (SSGs) which represent the range of science disciplines active in Antarctica. The SSGs are organized into three areas of science: GeoScience, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The UKNCAR may nominate up to four representatives to each SSG. Each SSG elects three officers, a Chief Officer, a Deputy Chief Officer, and a Secretary.
SSGs identify research areas or fields that might be best investigated by a SCAR Scientific Research Programme and by establishing a Scientific Programme Planning Group to develop a formal proposal to the Executive Committee. A Scientific Programme Group will be established following approval by the Delegates of a proposal. SSGs can also establish Action Groups to address specific research topics within the discipline, and Expert Groups to address a specific scientific issue (e.g. Expert Group on Birds).

Standing Committees
SCAR also has three Standing Committees. The Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System (SC-ATS) provides independent scientific advice and information to SCAR on scientific and technical matters regarding the Antarctic Treaty System. The Standing Committee on Data Management (SC-ADM) advises SCAR on all matters relating to the cataloguing, archiving and accessing of Antarctic scientific data. The management of Data and Information on behalf of SCAR's scientific community is carried out by the Standing Committee on Geographic Information (SC-AGI) and SC-ADM. The Standing Committee on Finance advises SCAR on all financial matters, including budgets and annual statements.
