My career in geophysics has taken me literally from the Equator to the Poles. I started out in oil exploration geophysics in the West African jungle and then alternated periods in Antarctic marine geophysics with North Sea oil exploration.  I finally settled on academic polar work when I joined the British Antarctic Survey in November 1986.  I have so far undertaken 18 research expeditions to Antarctica and two to the Arctic.  My current main research interest is in using ground-penetrating radar techniques to map the bed of ice streams in great detail to determine what controls the speed such glaciers flow at. I also use similar equipment to examine the internal structure of sub-glacial bedforms such as drumlins which are now exposed in formerly glaciated terrain.
