I have worked within the Climate Programme of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge since 2009, undertaking research primarily focused on improving understanding of the polar climate and the physical processes that occur there (atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere).  This is predominately achieved using regional atmosphere models and global climate models.  Between 2005 and 2009 I worked at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) in Reading, researching the role of orography (resolved and sub-grid) in the ECMWF forecast system, and on the parameterisation of non-orographic gravity waves.  My post-doctoral research between 2001 and 2005 was at University College London working with Prof. Julian Hunt on the modelling of atmosphere/ocean/sea-ice processes in the polar regions.

  • The assessment and improvement of high-resolution atmospheric models over complex regions. 
  • Impacts of climate change on the Hindu Kush - Himalayan - Tibetan (HKHT) region.
  • Understanding the contribution of the Antarctic Peninsula to future sea-level rise.
  • Improved understanding and prediction of West Antarctic climate change.
  • The dynamical mechanisms associated with recent Southern Hemisphere climate change in response to the Antarctic ozone hole.
  • Modelling the effects of realistic polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) to improve projections of the closure of the Antarctic ozone hole.
