I work in the BAS Environment Office alongside the Senior Environmental Manager and the Environmental Research and Monitoring Manager. Together we implement the organisation’s environmental policy to ensure that BAS science has the minimum impact on Antarctica’s fragile environment.
To meet the requirements of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (1991) I collate Preliminary Environmental Assessments for all new BAS projects, ensure that they are reviewed adequately and the appropriate permits are obtained from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. As part of our legal obligation to remove all hazardous waste and rubbish from Antarctic stations and ships operated by BAS, I co-ordinate the disposal of this waste and manage our waste contract. An integral part of this role is to provide advice on general waste management to staff on our ships and bases.
I produce and maintain the BAS Oil Spill Contingency plans to minimise marine and terrestrial pollution should an incident occur. I also am responsible for the Environmental Management System ISO 14001 for BAS headquarters in Cambridge and the ships.
