Biography
2009 - . Middle Atmsopheric Dynamics workpackage leader. We focus on dynamic vertical coupling through the atmosphere from the surface to the thermosphere and vice versa, using observations from instrumentation in the Antarctic and elsewhere globally, assimilative data sets, and analytical models. We aim to understand how the Sun's variability can affect the atmosphere at the surface via whole atmosphere dynamical links so that estimates of anthropogenic climate change can be more accurately quantified against this natural variability. We also study the role that middle atmospheric dynamics in the polar regions plays in modulating the transfering of energy from one part of the globe to another.
2005- 2009: Project Leader for HOLISTIC - HOlistic Links between Ionosphere Stratosphere and Troposphere and their Influence on Climate. This project focuses on links between solar variability and climate via the middle and upper atmosphere. We are investigating dynamical and electrical processes using observations and models, how these might act as amplifiers of solar variability and how they are linked to long term trend patterns throughout the atmosphere.
2000-2005: As Principal Investigator of the Geospace Atmosphere Transfer Functions core programme my science focus is on the vertical linkage of energy and matter through the atmosphere, particularly the region between 50km altitude and 200km altitude encompassing the mesosphere, lower thermosphere and a greater part of the ionosphere.
