British Antarctic Survey’s Halley Research Station received a 2014 Civic Trust Award and a Civic Trust Special Award for Sustainability at the 55th Annual Awards Ceremony held on Friday 7th March 2014 in Blackpool. Designed by architect Hugh Broughton, engineered by AEOCOM, and constructed by Galliford Try, Halley is the UK’s most southerly Antarctic research station. These two awards are the latest accolades to recognise Halley Research Station for its demonstration of excellent design, engineering, construction and sustainability credentials.

The Civic Trust Awards scheme raises awareness of the important role played by high quality architecture, landscape and urban design and enhancing the quality of the environment. The programme encourages higher standards across the UK and internationally by rewarding outstanding projects in all fields of environmental design.

Professor Jane Francis, Director of British Antarctic Survey said,

“I am delighted with these latest awards – and offer my warm congratulations to the design, engineering and construction teams. As winter darkness approaches and temperatures plunge our Halley research and support team is now into its winter operation mode. Our colleagues are equally delighted that the station that is their home as well as their work place has been recognised in this way.”

The Civic Trust Awards attracted 238 applications; 79 national and international projects were rewarded with a Civic Trust Award, Commendation or Community Recognition. Eight Special Awards were presented to projects that have demonstrated outstanding credentials in specific areas.
