Role of the Polar Data Centre
The Polar Data Centre (PDC) coordinates the management of data collected by UK funded scientists in the polar regions, and replaces the Antarctic Environmental Data Centre (AEDC) from 1st April 2009.
The PDC is based within the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) network of data centres. It is the UK’s National Antarctic Data Centre in the SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM).

Remit of the PDC
The responsibilities of the PDC include:
- Setting standards for data collection, format and documentation
- Ensuring long term durability of data, format and documentation
- Appraising long-term value and importance of data and information resources
- Ensuring data can be found, shared, and interpreted efficiently and effectively, meeting UK, European and International legislative requirements
- Protecting the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of NERC and other data providers
- Meeting the legal requirements of the Antarctic Treaty (Article III.1.c), and relevant resolutions of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM)
- Enable delivery of more productive and timely research by providing data management support for science programmes
