Advertising of vacancies

All vacancies are advertised on this website, plus in relevant publications or websites.

We have a number of recruiting cycles to prepare for the winter and summer seasons in Antarctica — this is especially true of Antarctic Support Staff. Advertising for research support positions begins in the autumn and some contracts start in June, July or August, depending on training requirements. Recruitment for technical support posts starts in February/March and interviewing takes place in May and August.

Even if you don’t find something to suit you at the moment, keep watching this site for news of new job opportunities, or register with the Jobs by Email service to be kept informed of your particular area of interest.

Applying for a job

You can apply online or apply by post for vacancies.

Selection/interview process

Once the closing date has passed, your application form will be passed on for the short-listing exercise. You will be notified of the outcome of your application as soon as possible after the closing date. Should we wish to invite you to interview you will be notified at that time. Everyone will in due course be notified whatever the outcome is.

Medical examinations

If your contract is based in Cambridge, and you are not expected to go to the Antarctic, you will not normally have to undergo a medical examination.

If you are required to work in Antarctica a medical examination is essential. This is carried out by a BAS doctor and at BAS’ expense. You must also ensure that you have a thorough dental check before leaving the UK.

Antarctic Employment Pool (AEP)

Those that are recruited on Antarctic based appointments will be offered an AEP contract and will automatically become part of the “pool”. This essentially means that employees are eligible to be considered for further Antarctic appointments without having to make another application. BAS Personnel staff will make contact with AEP employees on an annual basis.

Work permits and eligibility to work in the UK

You must be eligible to live and work in the UK in order to work for BAS. BAS can only apply for a work permit in cases where there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers: otherwise applicants should normally be resident in the UK, or a national of the European Economic Area (EU States plus Norway and Iceland), or a national of Switzerland.
