3. Purpose:
To lead, direct and develop the BAS innovation strategy, ensuring that within its overall remit BAS can be seen as contributing significantly to the innovation and impact agendas of both NERC and wider government. To ensure that BAS objectives and its successes are communicated effectively.

4. Duties:
Responsibilities

1) To provide strategic advice to BAS Director on knowledge exchange and impact-related activity and to work in partnership with other BAS senior staff to enhance the BAS contribution in these areas;

2) To ensure the successful operation of the Innovation Centre

3) To provide organizational leadership/act as a champion for innovation and for effective communication;

4) To create and deliver an innovation strategy that enables BAS to increase and enhance the profile of the economic impact of its research activity through the successful translation of its science and expertise into outputs that support the growth of the UK economy;

5) To create and maintain strategic partnerships with business that support knowledge transfer and result in the effective exploitation of BAS science in supporting economic growth;

6) To develop the effective collection, interpretation and communication of impacts arising from BAS science, ensuring that these have a high profile within BIS and other Government Departments, including the FCO and HM Treasury;
7) To review and update BAS corporate communication strategies.


Resources

The Director of Innovation and Impact will have responsibility for expert teams based in Cambridge covering the main areas of responsibility (Impact, KE, Business development, Communications).

The Director of Innovations and Impact does not have direct responsibility for Finance and HR teams, but will be expected to work closely with BAS Heads of Finance and of HR and have an understanding of the finances in their area.

Reporting relationship
The Director of Innovation and Impact will report to Director, BAS. They will work as one of the four person BAS senior management team (Director, Director of Science, Director of Innovation & Impact, Director of Operations).

The Person

Standing
1) Possess extensive, senior-level experience of research and development outside the public sector;
2) Have a proven track record in business research, taking it to market and an understanding of researchers development needs and the risks involved;
3) Already be part of appropriate networks covering potential partners for BAS;
4) From the outset have sufficient credibility to operate effectively at a senior level in BAS and NERC;
5) Convincing representative of the Director of BAS at senior level external meetings.

Strategy
1) Able to develop a convincing strategic vision that reflects the needs of stakeholders and is clearly aligned to NERC objectives;
2) Have a commitment to making science work for wider societal benefit;
3) Understand the importance of wealth creation and the part this plays in returning investment opportunities for science;
4) Has a clear understanding of the importance of effective communication and a vision for how this can be achieved;
5) Understands and can promote effective stakeholder engagement;
6) Able to think and contribute strategically in a wider context as part of the BAS leadership team;
7) Has an understanding of the issues involved in the public funding of science and of the constraints this introduces; able to operate effectively within this culture.

1) Able to provide leadership to staff at all levels, including professionals/specialists;
2) Open-minded, receptive to new ideas;
3) Someone who involves and encourages others;
4) A champion for good change management;
5) Possesses an understanding of the need for sound budgetary management and to manage prudently.

2) Capable of showing leadership across all areas of BAS activity, even those not within direct control;

4) Able to stand in for the Director as required.

2) Has a track record of establishing partnerships and fully understands the importance of seeking opportunities for collaborative funding;
3) Understands clearly the importance of effective stakeholder engagement and will promote this.
