Long Piston Corer lowered into position but still clamped to ship (JCR) during sea trials. The Long Piston Corer has the ability to take virtually undisturbed cores of the sediment on the seabed. This is achieved by using a stationary piston which is held in contact with the sediment surface through a series of wires and pulley wheels which are attached to a base plate on the seabed. Using this method the corer is able to penetrate the sediment under its own weight independently of the ship's motion.
