Sno Cats in Antarctica
Multimedia
Extensive use is made of Tucker Sno-cats which are descendents of the vehicles used in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Sno-cats are powered by Detroit Diesel or Cummins 6BT and QSB engines of about 170 HP driving through Allison automatic transmissions to four tracks which are steered by turntables to which the axles are fitted. Sno-cats are used for carrying personnel and towing sledges of up to 8 tonnes weight. BAS currently run a fleet of 12 Tucker Sno-Cats.
