Since 2000 a succession of staff who have overwintered at Bird Island research station have contributed to the monthly web diary. The diary provides a fascinating account from different viewpoints of the annual cycle of life at Bird Island. Originally the diaries were written for school children; however over the years it has become clear that the general public, including the friends and relatives of staff at Bird Island, have found the diary invaluable in presenting a fresh view of Bird Island activities. The literary quality of the diaries shows that the art of writing about life in the polar regions is as thriving today as it was in the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration.
