Principal Scientist Info for cruises on Research Ships
All Principal Scientists should download, complete and electronically send Forms 1 – 5, to Chris Hindley (BAS Ship Operations Manager) before 1st April of the year (not BAS Antarctic season) preceeding that in which the cruise will take place.

Any Principal Scientist wishing to use National Marine Facilities Sea Systems or NMEP equipment MUST also complete a NERC SME form online.

Once Logged in “Create Profile” and select SME
(While this is a full ship time funding request it also covers the request for equipment and technical support)
It is only necessary to fill in the mandatory sections to apply for equipment and technical support. If you have to complete any sections referring to funding please just enter “BAS Core approved” or “NERC funded”
DUE TO THE HIGH DEMAND FOR EQUIPMENT IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU COMPLETE THIS FORM BY THE FOLLOWING CUT-OFF DATES:
For cruises starting between 1/1 - 30/4 complete the form by 1st Sept two years previously. eg cruise starts 14/2/09 form complete by cut-off 1/9/07
For cruises starting between 1/5 - 31/12 complete the form by 1st Jan of the previous year. eg cruise starts 14/10/09 form complete by cut-off 1/1/08
Any Principal Scientist requiring Diplomatic Clearance for any country (except Norway) must also complete Form 4. Use Form 5 for an application to work in Norwegian waters. Diplomatic clearance applications must be sent to Chris Hindley at BAS at least 7 months before the start of the cruise. Failure to get the application to BAS in time could jeopardise the chance of obtaining Diplomatic Clearance.
