Karl Tuplin - Project Manager

Karl Tuplin is a chartered civil engineer. In the early part of his career he worked for a specialist piling contractor followed by the Property Services Agency before joining the Ministry of Defence to manage construction projects and work on the MOD’s overseas estates. Karl spent a total of six and a half years based in the Falklands on two tours managing a team of military and civilian engineers and overseeing the property management of the MOD’s estate in the South Atlantic. Karl joined BAS in December 2003 to manage the Halley VI project.

Martin Bell - Logistics Manager

Martin Bell, a farmers son from Cumbria, served his time as an agricultural mechanic and heavy plant fitter before he moved to BAS. He has wintered 3 times in the Antarctic, twice at Halley and once at Rothera. Martin has also looked after the Halley summer season, with duties including, site engineer and team leader. Martin took up the post of Vehicles Engineer in 2002 and looks after the employment of mechanics, vehicle purchasing and assists with the vehicle refurbishment in Cambridge. He is now part of the Halley VI project team which involves ensuring that all the necessary construction materials are transported from the ship to the construction site.

Paul Cousens - Mechanical and Electrical Manager

Paul Cousens started out as a Fitter/Turner in New Zealand, and moved on to the HVAC industry after completing an NZCE. He left NZ in 1992 for travel experience, eventually relocating in the UK. After several years in London he joined BAS in 1997 as a HVAC technician, and after completing a degree, has since worked with the BAS Building Section in Cambridge. Paul now works as Mechanical Services Engineer with the Building Section, and the Halley VI Project. His interests include: Travel, Harriers, and Koi Carp.

Simon Coggins - Science Manager

Simon completed a Degree in Physics at Sheffield University and a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham before joining BAS as a wintering Data Manager. He spent two years at Halley, managing the data from the scientific experiments before returning to the UK in 2006 to join the Halley VI project team. His role as Science manager involved coordinating the decommissioning of the science at Halley V and starting the planning for  the installation of the new facilities at Halley VI. Simon has now left the project, and we wish him well for the future.

Mike Rose - Deputy Project Manager

Mike was first wintered at Halley in 1989 and 1990 and has returned for many summer seasons. Mike is by trade an electronic engineer and has specialised  in scientific instrumentation, automation and environmental power. Mike’s role on the project is to assist Karl in the project management and to plan the installation and commissioning of the science at the new station.

Partnerships

Faber Maunsell is part of the worldwide AECOM Technology Corporation, which has been responsible for the construction of more facilities in Antarctica than any other company in the world, including the South Pole Observatory and the South Pole Station Dormitory. The team is led from Faber Maunsell’s UK headquarters in St Albans, but draws on specialist cold climate and remote location expertise from around the world.

Since its foundation, Hugh’s practice has developed a strong reputation for well-considered contemporary design. Projects designed by Hugh have won awards from the RIBA, the Civic Trust and the International Property Federation. In 2002 the practice was runner up in the prestigious Building Awards Young Architectural Practice of the Year. Based in London, Hugh Broughton has worked on a range of diverse projects from the British Council in Malaysia to the World Intellectual Property Organisation Headquarters in Geneva.

Morrison Falkland Limited (MFL) is a subsidiary of Morrison PLC. They have many years of construction experience working in the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. BAS have had many years of collaboration with Morrison on a number of Antarctic construction projects, including the recent Bird Island rebuild and the current Rothera Infrastructure re-development programme. They joined the project in March 2005 as a construction partner.
