Location: The Falkland Islands - Virtual Trip to Antarctica
Location: Falkland Islands
As the RAF Tristar approaches the Falkland Islands, military jets arrive to escort the plane at each wingtip. The aircraft eventually lands at Mount Pleasant Airport (MPA), which is a large, (usually very windy) military airfield in the middle of the Falkland Islands. It is a modern air facility constructed as a result of the Falklands War.
The journey from MPA to Port Stanley is along gravel roads and passes through mountainous scenery dominated by stone runs, which are similar to glaciers, except made up of rocks rather than ice! At the end of a bumpy journey you arrive in Stanley - the capital of the Falkland Islands which has a population of just over 1000 people.
On the sea front on Ross Road, next to the Upland Goose Hotel, is the new and impressive BAS Office, staffed by Pauline Sackett. Pauline is ever-present all the year round and is responsible for getting personnel to and from flights on the island, for arranging provisions and stores for ships and assisting the bases down South with all their needs - a very important cog in the BAS machinery!!
