The only way to mend the ozone hole is to stop releasing CFCs and other ozone depleting gases into the atmosphere. The restrictions of the Montreal Protocol and its extensions are helping to do this.

Many other suggestions have been made for mending the ozone hole, but these turn out to be difficult or dangerous to put into practice and do not solve the problem. Examples of suggestions include the use of aeroplanes or balloons:

Supersonic transport planes could take ozone up to the Antarctic stratosphere. Unfortunately this would need many Concorde flights a day and the extra ozone would immediately start to be destroyed by the catalytic reactions. In addition each flight would consume many tonnes of fuel and the exhaust gases would further change the chemical makeup of the stratosphere and contribute to the greenhouse effect. Balloons carrying ozonisers could be used in place of planes, but it would need over 100 billion balloons, which would create an even bigger environmental problem!
