Prof. John Turner

This is me!

I'm leader of the project 'Climate Variability and Modelling' (CLIVARM) in the British Antarctic Survey.
My group uses a wide range of data to study how the climate of the Antarctic has changed over the last 50 years and how it will change during the next century. We make extensive use of the output of the atmospheric models run by the UK Meteorological Office and the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts, satellite imagery collected by the ARIES receiver at the Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula and the available meteorological reports.

I'm also a Visiting Professor at the University of Malaya.

The SCAR Action Group on Prediction of Changes in the Physical and Biological Environment of the Antarctic

I'm co-chair of this group and maintain its web site

The SCAR Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) report

I'm the chief editor of the SCAR ACCE report, which is a major initiative to synthese knowledge on past, present and possible future changes in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and their impact on the biota.

The current draft can be found online at http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/met/SCAR_ssg_ps/ACCE.htm

The International Antarctic Weather Forecasting Handbook

The handbook is now available online at http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/met/momu/International_Antarctic_Weather_Forecasting_Handbook/index.htm

This volume has been prepared under the auspices of The British Antarctic Survey, The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, The World Meteorological Organisation, The International Commission on Polar Meteorology, The Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and is edited by myself and Steve Pendlebury (Australian Bureau of Meteorology). It grew out of a workshop on Antarctic weather forecasting held in Hobart, Australia in 1998, which brought together forecasters, researchers and administrators to discuss the current state of forecasting for the continent and how it could be improved. A report of the meeting by Turner et al. can be found in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Vol. 81, pp 75-94, January 2000.  The Handbook consists of over 700 pages of information on the meteorology of the Antarctic, forecasting techniques used in the Antarctic and forecasting information for specific locations. It is available as a single PDF file (while can be reader using the free Adobe Acrobat reader) and can be FTPed from the BAS anonymous FTP site using the linked instructions.
