Guide to the Oracle tables
Metlog Comprehensible User Interface
This page is an attempt at a more comprehensible interface to
our online Oracle archive.
If you cannot get what you want via this page,
you may need to use the
Full Interface.
Climatological data
Most of the information we have is synoptic data: ie, actual weather reports as they are received.
That is not what you want if you want to know long-term averages.
Monthly averages of temperature and pressure are available from the
READER project
and the
table Jones and Limbert (don't ask...), which is updated with CLIMAT reports. The READER data is to be preferered.
Experimentally, we have automated (and fuller) decoding of CLIMAT reports
from gts_perl_zclimat.
Further links to other datasets are available from the
public data page.
In particular, long-term records and trends for a number of stations are
available from G. Marshall.
Surface (land or ship) Data [SYNOP]
The last report from each land or
ship is available. We also
have a clickable-map interface to land manned and AWS stations.
Recent (from the present back to the start of the current year) surface data is available
from the table
GTS_PERL_SYNOP (selected to Antarctic stations)
or
GTS_PERL_SYNOP (all stations).
This link will take some time (20-30 seconds, without including netlag) to come up,
because it will search the table for all possible station ID's.
If you know which station you want and it is on the list below, it may be quicker to select a link from one
of the options below.

Use this if you want the default data selection.
Data selection
Use this if you want to modify the default data selection
(different dates, data items, averaging, etc).
Earlier Data
Earlier data is available by year:
Upper Air data [TEMP]
Upper air is available from fewer stations.
Select tables "gts_temp_yyyy", where yyyy=1987,...,1998 for historical data with passable error checking
- see the full interface.
Select "gts_perl_temp" for data after April 1997, with minimal checking.
There is also some older data available.
You can select from all recent data available for all stations from table
GTS_PERL_TEMP,
or just the Antarctic stations
here.
If you already know which station you want, it will be faster to use the choice below.
Buoy Data
Is available from table GTS_PERL_ZBUOY
or link buoys-met.
