Big and little endian's, and machine word size, for making ancils

Various of my perl scripts (wunconv2.pl most obviously) used for building ancils are, nominally, machine independant since they are in perl. Aha! But of course there are hidden dependancies. If anyone could tell me the correct "pack" options to remove this dependency, I'd be grateful. But in the meantime...

I have found, traditionally, that they work best on alphas. On pentium/linux they won't work, because the machine size is wrong. On suns, the endian-ness is wrong. Recently I've discovered that opteron/linux appears to be OK too, though I haven't tested this thoroughly. This has the advantage (here) that the file system runs a *lot* faster...
